Lome Peace Accord

On July 7, 1999, the president of Sierra Leone, Ahmed Kabbah and the Revolutionary United Front leader, Foday Sankoh signed the Lome Peace Accord. This agreement granted Foday Sankoh a position in the Sierra Leone government and the transformation of the RUF into a polical party.

Impact On Civilians

The civilains were already the main target for the RUF because the rebels thought their torturing on the civilians would scare the government. The rebels would commit acts of murder, mutiliation, rape, aduction, and many other cruel things to the innocent civilain population. The Lome Peace Agreements were made to create peace and stop these acts. Unfortunately, the killings of the civilians in Sierra Leone continued.

The Lome Peace Agreements also declared the Revolutionary United Front, which was the main rebel army that participated in the Sierra Leonean Civil War,a political party known as the Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP) and into a professional army. It also made the founder of the RUF, Foday Sankoh, the vice president and the chairman of the Board of the Commision for the Management of Strategic Resources, National Reconstruction, and Development (CMRRD).
